In 1972, Baird Whitlock, Hall’s successor at Simon’s Rock (1972–1977), announced a new baccalaureate program that admitted students after 10th grade. That program, wrote one observer, was essential. “Without it, the college was an expensive private liberal arts junior college at a time when such colleges were closing for lack of students” (Levine, 1978, p. 384). But enrollment problems persisted. Some parents preferred to defer high tuition charges; students hesitated to leave high school after finding their social niche, school administrators feared “creaming,” and Simon’s Rock confronted high attrition rates associated with transfers to other colleges (Levine, 1978).
