Whatever deprivations we had known, they were not material. The bell rang, the train slowed, and we looked out into great pens of whiteface cattle driven in from the range, waiting to be Page 5 loaded for market. The pens seemed endless. The prescient bawling of the cattle added a strange dimension to the already strange atmosphere. The little station slid alongside and we saw Papa, whom we had not seen for five long months, watching for a sight of us. My sister ran ahead and leaped into his arms.

Then I heard the fast soft ticks of little feet running up and down the walls. Once a thump on my blanket and the feet continuing on the floor. I wanted to wake up Papa to protect us, but I knew that I must keep still and perhaps I would sleep, perhaps morning would come. Then something bit me. Without thinking, I scratched the bite, felt a small fat bug, and smelled a revolting odor. I cried out; I could not help it. Mama was instantly awake, out of her bed. " Papa leaped cursing from the bed and lighted the oil lamp.

Our traveling companions went their way. The tiny village of Two Buttes was dark with sleep. A lighted window of the small place where we stopped beckoned us to spend the night. Mama suggested it. "There's no hotel here," Papa said. " He had arranged it with the driver. " We could hardly bear the thought of still another journey; we had only napped on the train since leaving Oklahoma. But Papa's word was law. A woman in nightclothes opened the lighted door and looked at us one by one. " Mama said.
